Walking With The Master

One man’s ‘walk with Jesus

I experienced being ‘born again’ when I was about 10 yrs old while attending church with my mom. The church service was filled with fear about dying and going to hell. I can remember walking down the isle and getting on my knees, asking for forgiveness of my sins.

I’m 62 today and the experience has never left me. I’ve never doubted the existence of Jesus Christ. However, I’ve wondered often about the churches approach to explaining hell instead of Love.

Now, being born again didn’t mean I lived a Holy Life and everything was loving and perfect in my home. As a matter of fact it was just the opposite and it would be years later before I learned why.

I came from what is now called a ‘violently dysfunctional home’. Most of my teen years were spent avoiding my dad and when I was 16 years of age, I dropped out of school and moved away from home. Even though my mother was instrumental in giving me hope in Jesus, her relationship with my dad was anything but Christian. She did, though, raise me with Christ-like love and guided me to HIS WORDS (in red) in the Holy Bible, and for that I am forever blessed.

When I was age 23, while in a near death experience, I had a dream. In this dream, I saw the Light of Christ and heard HIS VOICE. I was told, that one day, I would be speaking for Him. At that time, I stuttered so badly it was impossible for me to say 5 words in a row, let alone believe I would be in front of groups of people ‘speaking’ for Jesus.

After I had given more than 2500 motivational seminars thru-out America and Canada, at age 49 the Lord instructed me to retire and serve Him full time. And by then, or so it seemed to me, I’d been ‘Walking with the Master’ for a long time. It wasn’t until after I retired and began to focus on the ‘words’ of Jesus, that I learned just how much of my walk would’ve been considered lukewarm.

Jesus said, "I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I could wish you were cold or hot. So then, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of My mouth”.

A year after I retired, the Lord instructed me to compose a book using ‘His’ words only and to not add my own opinions. I titled it – ‘What Did Jesus Say - The Seven Messages from the Master’. As I began to read the 4 Gospels and separate the ‘words’ of Jesus from the rest of the story, His words began to ‘jump out’ at me with more clarity than ever before. When I separated the dialog between those arguing with Jesus vs. those who believed in Him and followed Him, I began to clearly see why we’re expected to follow His teachings and commandments everyday, in every way.

While I was preparing the manuscript ‘What Did Jesus Say’, (which took 10 yrs to finish - see the story at ) I was also doing free Christian counseling online. After a while, I became alarmed by all the different views of the same subject – ‘Christianity’. At times I wondered if we were reading the same 4 Gospels. Finally, after counseling 100's of professed Christians, I discovered the biggest common denominator in their behavior and the resulting difficulties in life was their lack of reading the ‘words’ of Jesus. They were poor students of the Bible, ignorant of the teachings of Jesus to put it bluntly. And many of those who did know ‘what’ Jesus said, weren’t walking their talk.

Jesus said, "Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,' and not do the things which I say?”‬‬‬

In truth, most of them really didn't know ‘what’ Jesus said or had even read His words to learn about Him, let alone be obedient to Him. If they did know His words, then they would’ve known the TRUTH and the TRUTH would’ve made them free, just like Jesus said it would. I mean it when I say, “They literally didn't know what Jesus said”, because they never took the time to read ‘His’ story.

If you’re a Christian, you must know what Jesus said, or all you have is someone else's opinion of what He said. Many people claiming to be Christians live in the darkness of fear, insecurity and often have doubts of their own worthiness, even after they claimed to be ‘born again’. Some even participate in judging, mocking, lying to and attacking others, without knowing or understanding they were not following what Jesus taught. At times I’ve wondered how many Christians even cared ‘what’ Jesus said.

When we pick and choose only the words of Jesus that make us feel better, we lose our relationship with Him. We're instructed by Jesus to give up ‘our way’ of living and thinking and follow His teachings and example, in all ways. We cannot do that without knowing His word. There are no excuses. Period!

Jesus said, "If anyone desires to come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me. For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it. ... If anyone loves me, he will keep my word; and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him.”

I promise, when you read ‘what’ Jesus said in the Gospels, you'll discover there is nothing in his teachings that allow us to live our life in the darkness of fear, unworthiness and sin, all the while professing to serve Christ in our life. According to Jesus, it’s our ‘thoughts’ and then our ‘actions’ that matter most.

We’re told, as Christians, to love one another and to pray for one another, including our enemies. We’re told to not judge one another but show mercy to one another. Our instructions are to do God’s will, by listening to and following the ‘words’ of Jesus.

Today, the divorce rate for Christian marriages is equal to those who don’t profess Christianity. I’ve learned myself (the hard way) that it’s impossible for a Christian marriage to ‘fail’ - it can only fail to be Christian. Every Christian marriage would be more likely to succeed and flourish if they simply followed His instruction. Jesus said, “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.”

I believe it’s time to follow ‘what’ Jesus said above ALL OTHERS. If I’m considered too serious (hot) then I will accept that, over being not serious enough (lukewarm). When we follow the ‘words’ of Jesus as He instructed us, we will avoid the pitfalls in life so often mentioned by Peter, James, John and Paul.

If you’re going to call yourself a Christian then begin ‘Walking with the Master’, with the obedience, courage and faith he asks of you. And when you know ‘what’ Jesus said you won’t have to worry anymore about what everyone else is saying. Trust His words, follow His commandments and celebrate His resurrection victory, by living ‘your’ life in His Love.

And remember this: If it weren’t for Jesus, there wouldn’t be a Holy Bible. Therefore, ‘what Jesus said’ is the most important knowledge to have, and ‘what Jesus did’ is the most important story to know.

Let me end this by sharing with you, some ‘words’ from Jesus.

HIS DECLARATION: “I have come as a light into the world, that whoever believes in Me should not abide in darkness.

HIS INVITATION : “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”

DISCIPLESHIP : “Follow Me, and I will make you become fishers of men.- If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love Him, and We will come to Him and make Our home with Him. He who does not love Me does not keep My words; and the word which you hear is not Mine but the Father's who sent Me.- If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. "

THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN : "Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord’, shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven. Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in your name, cast out demons in your name, and done many wonders in your name?' And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!' - Strive to enter through the narrow gate, for many, I say to you, will seek to enter and will not be able.”

THE END TIMES : “Watch therefore, for you do not know what hour your Lord is coming.  But know this, that if the master of the house had known what hour the thief would come, he would have watched and not allowed his house to be broken into. Therefore you also be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.

“These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.

If you’re a ‘True’ Christian, a Believer, then you know that Jesus requires us to know His words and follow His commandments. When we’re ‘Walking with the Master’ we’re following HIS LEAD, doing it HIS WAY and walking in HIS LOVE.

If you're walking around in darkness, fears, and doubts, then you don't really know the Master so take the time to read about him and know him. When you know and believe ‘what’ Jesus said, you’ll be ‘Walking with the Master’ everyday. And, you’ll have the peace Jesus said you can have – HIS PEACE.

Let me know if I can HELP.

May God bless all those who serve Him, everyday, in every way.

In His Word and Love, I serve, as your brother in Christ.
